So .. first outdoor ride of the season, on my first-ever race bike, a 1979 Raleigh Professional. After years in my garage, Mike not only got it road-worthy again last spring, but even said nice things about it, after which I moved it to California, where the 1st outdoor ride of 2009 involved riding up to the last and highest KOM of the 6th day of the Tour de California to the applause and cheers of the people waiting for Lance and then waiting, in the snow, myself - with James Kritz who had found me after riding up and down the mountain about 3 times to my 1 time - for that magical moment. Today's 2010 first ride was warmer and flatter, a 50 km loop from my parent's place, which first goes through blooming orchards (the pink almond flowers are the prettiest) and then climbs a bit along a river into the foothills, which are an intense emerald green covered with flaming orange poppies. No more riding this week though as I prepare for the 10 km running race on Saturday that I won (my AG) decisively last year and plan to win again. For Canada.

Good luck!

Well ... being quite clumsy, and mostly running trail .. I do end up on my ass now and then ... but tomorrow is asphalt; I intend to stay upright.

I guess you could always wear a helmet. Might command some curious glances tho...
Good Luck!

Total smack-down here. I had a rather significant 10k PB and beat the 2nd place woman in my AG by >1:30 (as well as the 1st place woman in the next younger AG by almost 2 minutes). I got swarmed by the lot of them wondering where the hell I had come from. I did Canada proud!

Bike ride tomorrow; I think I'm gonna brave the beautiful but isolated climb where I have to ride through a Nazi pig farm. It's so wierd here.

Are you serious about a nazi pig farm or is that just a descriptive term not to be taken literally?

I generally say 'it's so wierd here' everytime I go to America (not to say I don't enjoy myself ...).

Ask Jay how I feel about Walmart. I made my yearly visit and promptly could not bring myself to set foot back into that scary scary warehouse.

No - serious - it's at the bottom of a fantastic 8 km 6-14% climb. I rode by yesterday - there are lots of pigs and swastikas and signs about "you're dead" - but I didn't get all the details 'coz I was looking STRAIGHT ahead and pedaling as hard as I could. The rest of the ride was brilliant - big very scenic loop with very little traffic.

Two nights before I got here there was a shootout 3 km from my parents' idyllic place. Crazy guy in "mobile home" (like oh so mobile) killed 2 cops. The cops fired 400 rounds into his place, and missed - he killed himself.

I have been in Walmart once - had food poisoning from road trip food and it seemed like the perfect place to do my business!
