Club Time Trial #1 – Wed. May 20/15

UPDATE: Results posted below.

The first TT of our 4 event time trial series is this week, with first rider starting at 7:00pm!

Note the schedule for the other events in the series:

  • June 17
  • July 8
  • August 19

Time trials are a great way to test your fitness.  It is a race against yourself and the clock. Riders start at 1 minute intervals and the challenge is to try to catch the rider ahead of you and not to be caught by the rider behind you!  No drafting is allowed.

We use the same course for each of the 4 TT events allowing you to measure your training progression throughout the season.

The course is a 17km long out-and-back route on the rolling hills of Fourth Line East just north of County Road 51 (road to Ariss)

TIPS

  • maintain a steady power output and heart rate throughout the event
  • have a smooth, regular pedalling technique
  • position yourself to be extremely aerodynamic
  • discipline yourself to operate just below your anaerobic threshold until near the end of the course.

REMINDER

  • please exercise caution during the TT, especially at the turn around, as the roads are open and vehicles can be expected
  • please remember that while waiting for your start to not obstruct traffic
  • please remember to bring your club membership card.

Course Record:  Ryan Roth 22:08.49 – 46.07 km/hr  – July 18/12
Meeting Location:  Start Line – 4th Line East, just north of County Road 51 (road to Ariss)

  1. A few helpful hints for people who haven’t done these time Trials before.
Steve will give you a big push at the start if you bring him a footlong meatball sub from Subway with Miss Vickies Jalapeno chips and a diet vitamin water.
Drafting is strictly prohibited unless no one sees you, in which case go for it!
When passing another rider who started in front of you, you must increase your speed by at least 5 km/h, not to avoid drafting but to totally demoralize that person and make them feel like stopping right there.

Make sure you have all your aero gear ready, your aero helmet should be so long it also acts as a sunblock for your entire body.
Discs wheels are encouraged, if you cannot afford discs then duct tape applied between the spokes does the exact same thing and can be removed so your wheels can still be used for climbing.
Aero skin suits are mandatory for pure speed, if you don’t have one then a sleeveless tri-athlete jersey will do, just don’t expect anyone to talk to you as you wait at the start line.
Drop bars don’t really do much except make you look like a pro so save your money on other things like an aero seatpost, or a good set of aero brake pads to give you the most bang for your buck.
    Good luck!
